Video slots – Page 10

Classic slots keep the original mechanical layout. They have three reels, a handful of paylines, and a short symbol set of fruit, bars, and sevens. There's no bonus round. What you see on the reels is the whole game.

Video slots trade that simplicity for depth. Five reels is the norm now, and paylines run from a fixed handful into the hundreds once cluster-pay and Megaways-style mechanics get involved, where the number of ways to win can change on every spin. NetEnt's Starburst helped popularize the five-reel, wide-payline format years ago, and Megaways titles from Pragmatic Play and other studios have pushed that further still.

This added complexity changes the pace.

A three-reel classic pays small and often, while a video slot's bonus round can sit dormant for a long stretch before landing on a much bigger win.

Paylines are the patterns a winning combination has to land on. Some video slots fix the number of paylines so every spin costs the same; others let you adjust how many are active, which changes your total bet per spin. Cluster-pay and Megaways games skip fixed paylines altogether. Symbols pay based on how many land anywhere in a cluster or across a shifting reel setup, not on a straight line.

RTP, or return to player, is the average percentage of all money wagered on a slot that gets paid back to players over millions of spins. It reflects expected payout over a very long run, which individual sessions may diverge from widely. Online video slots typically carry an RTP somewhere in the low-to-high 90s, with the audited figure published in the game's paytable or help screen. A slot near the top of that range returns noticeably more over time than one near the bottom. On any given night you could still walk away up or down by a wide margin, and that gap between the long-run number and a single session is exactly why RTP alone doesn't tell you how a slot will feel to play.

Volatility, also called variance, describes the frequency and size of payouts. Low-volatility games pay small wins often, which suits a smaller bankroll and longer sessions. High-volatility games pay out less frequently but the wins run bigger when they land, which is the trade-off behind most Megaways and jackpot-heavy titles. Medium volatility sits in between. It's usually the safer starting point if you're not sure which style you prefer yet.
