SOFORT Casinos: Depositing With Sofortüberweisung Now That It Is Klarna

SOFORT still works at nine of the casinos on our list. The brand behind it is being folded into Klarna. At some cashiers you will now see an option labelled Klarna Pay Now where SOFORT used to sit.

I read through Stripe’s and Adyen’s own processor documentation for this update, because most SOFORT casino pages online were written before the merger and never revisited since. Sofort GmbH was absorbed into Klarna Bank AB. The rail it built still runs in several markets, just under fewer acquirers than before.

Is SOFORT Still Available in 2026?

Sofort GmbH merged into Klarna Bank AB in November 2024. The payment rail still operates at acquirers including Adyen, one of the processors casinos use across six European countries.

What you see at a given cashier depends entirely on the casino’s own payment processor. Stripe pulled SOFORT as a standalone method on 31 March 2025. Adyen continues to list it. That processor difference explains the uneven picture: one casino’s cashier drops SOFORT overnight, another keeps showing it for months longer. A page that still says SOFORT works everywhere, no caveats, simply has not been updated since the merger.

Casinos That Accept SOFORT

Nine casinos on our roster still show SOFORT, or its Klarna-branded replacement, as a working deposit option. I checked these cashier pages myself before this update went out. This data comes straight from our own casino database and reflects what is currently live on each cashier page.

Before you deposit, open the cashier and confirm the label you see. Some of these casinos now route the underlying payment through Klarna’s own checkout, where the button reads “Klarna Pay Now”. The bank-login mechanism behind it is unchanged.

What Sofortüberweisung Is and How It Works

Sofortüberweisung is a pay-by-bank method. You log into your own online banking on the payment processor’s screen, and the transfer gets initiated on your behalf. Your bank credentials never reach the casino itself, only the processor handling the payment.

The company was founded in 2005. Klarna took a majority stake in December 2013, and Sofort formally joined the Klarna group the following year. That relationship ran for a decade before the two entities merged outright. Since 2019, the method has operated under PSD2, the EU’s payment services directive. Today you confirm most SOFORT payments with strong customer authentication. Klarna itself has held a full Swedish banking licence since 2017. The Sofort business now sits inside Klarna’s regulated structure, operating as part of a fully licensed Swedish bank.

The Klarna Transition: What Changed at the Checkout

One company event and two separate processor decisions shaped what players see today. Klarna’s acquisition of Sofort happened in stages over more than a decade, and then the payment processors themselves stepped in with their own discontinuation timelines.

What a player actually sees at checkout depends on which of these has already reached their casino’s processor. Klarna Pay Now is the name of Klarna’s current immediate-payment product, and on some cashiers that is the button you now click where SOFORT used to sit. Cashiers change their labels without announcing it, and no processor publishes a date on which the SOFORT name disappeared from every checkout at once. Treat the brand name on the button as cosmetic and the underlying mechanism, a bank login on the processor’s own screen, as the thing that matters.

How to Deposit With SOFORT

The flow itself has not changed since the PSD2 rules kicked in. It runs the same whether the button says SOFORT or Klarna Pay Now.

  1. Open the casino’s cashier and select SOFORT or Klarna Pay Now from the deposit list.
  2. Choose your bank from the list the processor shows you.
  3. Log in with your own online banking credentials on that processor-hosted screen.
  4. Confirm the payment with your bank’s strong customer authentication step.
  5. Wait for the casino to credit your balance.

Your bank decides when the money actually moves. Adyen’s documentation says some banks delay processing until the next business day and do not ring-fence the funds in the meantime, so a payment made on a Saturday can sit until Monday before it settles on the bank’s side, even though the casino already shows a confirmed deposit.

Getting Your Winnings Out

No processor documentation we found, from Stripe or from Adyen, describes an outbound payout leg for SOFORT. It functions as a deposit rail, built to move money into a casino account. A refund is the closest thing that exists. It reverses a deposit that was already made, and Adyen’s own documentation supports partial refunds as well as multiple partial refunds against a single payment. A refund corrects or cancels a deposit you already made. It does not move a win out of your account, and casino cancellations and goodwill reversals both work the same way, crediting money back to the account it came from. Because no payout path is documented anywhere, plan for a second withdrawal method from the moment you deposit, before you have a win to cash out. Bank transfer, Skrill, or Neteller all publish a payout path that SOFORT itself does not.

Where SOFORT Still Works: Countries and Currencies

Adyen documents Sofort live in six countries. The documentation for other acquirers is not publicly available, so this coverage is limited to Adyen’s specification.

BelgiumEUR
GermanyEUR
SpainEUR

Outside that list, the cashier will offer Klarna’s own checkout or skip pay-by-bank entirely, routing you toward cards or e-wallets. The documentation available does not extend any further.

Fees, Limits and Speed

Nobody publishes a single fee schedule for this anymore. Adyen states that the merchant fee for Sofort is lower than for Klarna Pay Now without putting a figure on it. This is the only fee comparison available in current processor documentation.

Deposit limits come from two places. Your casino’s cashier sets a floor and ceiling, and your bank’s own transfer limits add another constraint, which vary by account and by bank. On speed, the casino shows a confirmed deposit immediately once you authorise the payment. The bank’s settlement follows its own schedule, as described in the deposit section above. A confirmed deposit at the cashier and a completed transfer at your bank represent two different moments, and treating them as simultaneous is where most confusion about this method starts.

Safety and Regulation

The security model strengthened since the merger. Because Sofort has been regulated under PSD2 since 2019, every payment goes through strong customer authentication on your bank’s own screen. Your login details reach a regulated financial provider over secure channels, never typed on a casino’s site. Klarna’s own Swedish banking licence covers the whole operation.

A genuine downside exists. A merchant, meaning the casino, cannot defend a Sofort chargeback. If a payment is disputed, your bank handles the resolution, bypassing the casino’s support desk. This advantage for depositors, bank-side protection, is precisely why some processors were cautious about the method for years. The method survived a real legal fight over exactly this kind of friction. German banks once wrote terms that forbade their own customers from using Sofortüberweisung at all, and the Bundeskartellamt had taken the position that this restriction was anticompetitive. The Federal Court of Justice referred to that position in case KZR 39/16, decided 18 July 2017. The underlying consumer objection, handing your online banking credentials to a third-party processor, is the same concern people still raise about pay-by-bank methods today; it just lost in court.

What I Like and Don’t Like About SOFORT Right Now

What still works in its favour:

  • No card numbers ever reach the casino’s own servers.
  • Strong customer authentication is required by regulation on every payment.
  • Deposits are confirmed at the cashier immediately once you authorise them.
  • The underlying rail operates inside a fully licensed bank, Klarna, with Swedish banking regulation.
  • Refunds are supported, including partial and multiple partial refunds when a deposit needs reversing.
  • It works at real casinos on our list today in production.

What genuinely counts against it now:

  • The consumer brand is being retired and the button now reads Klarna Pay Now at many casinos.
  • Availability depends entirely on which processor your casino happens to use.
  • Only refunds are documented; there is no payout leg, so you need a second method for withdrawals.
  • Settlement can lag by a full business day depending on your own bank.
  • A casino has no chargeback defence on a disputed Sofort payment, which means disputes run through your bank.

SOFORT vs the Alternatives

The choice between SOFORT and the neighbouring methods comes down to one question. Do you need the same method to carry your winnings back out? The table below sets the five options we cover side by side on deposit mechanism, payout support and the kind of player each one suits.

MethodDepositWithdrawalWhere it fits
SOFORT / Klarna Pay NowBank login, no card detailsNot documentedDepositors in AT, BE, DE, ES, NL, CH who bank online
TrustlyBank login, similar mechanismSupported by some casinosThe other major pay-by-bank rail; broader EU footprint
SkrillE-wallet balance or card top-upFast, published payout pathPlayers who want one method for both directions
NetellerE-wallet balance or card top-upFast, published payout pathSame profile as Skrill, different loyalty program
paysafecardPrepaid PIN, no bank linkNot supportedDepositors who want to cap spending without a bank account

SOFORT is deposit-only. Trustly publishes a withdrawal path at some of the same casinos and handles both directions. If you want a single pay-by-bank method for deposits and withdrawals, Trustly is the better fit. If you deposit via SOFORT and withdraw via another method anyway, this limitation carries minimal weight.

Bonuses and SOFORT Deposits

Depositing with SOFORT rarely affects your welcome bonus eligibility; most operators tie it to deposit amount. Some operators do exclude specific payment methods from specific promotions, so read the bonus terms at the cashier to confirm your SOFORT deposit qualifies for the offer. Our bonus listings show the wagering and minimum-deposit terms for these casinos; check the method exclusions there to be sure.

Other Payment Methods

If SOFORT does not fit, or your bank sits outside the countries where it still works, the rest of our payment methods hub covers the alternatives casinos actually support. For pay-by-bank without the brand confusion, look at Trustly. For a method that handles both deposits and withdrawals cleanly, Skrill, Neteller, and PayPal all publish payout paths. For prepaid spending caps, paysafecard skips the bank link entirely. Our general online casino hub covers the operators themselves if the payment method was never the real question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SOFORT the same thing as Klarna now?

They are the same company. Sofort GmbH merged into Klarna Bank AB in November 2024, so the business that used to run Sofortüberweisung independently now operates as part of Klarna. The payment mechanism still works the same way. You log into your own bank, and strong customer authentication confirms the payment under PSD2 rules. What changed is who owns and regulates it. Klarna holds a Swedish banking licence, and Sofort now operates inside that regulated bank.

Can I withdraw my winnings with SOFORT?

No. Every processor’s public documentation, including Adyen’s, describes SOFORT as a deposit method with a refund option. A refund reverses money you already paid in, and Adyen’s documentation supports partial refunds as well as multiple partial refunds against a single deposit. None of that moves your winnings anywhere. Pick a separate withdrawal method, such as bank transfer or an e-wallet, at the same cashier, and set it up before you need to cash out.

Which countries still support SOFORT deposits?

Adyen’s current documentation lists it live in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands in euros, plus Switzerland in Swiss francs. This reflects Adyen’s own coverage, and other acquirers were not reachable to confirm whether they support Sofort in additional markets. Outside those countries, expect the casino’s cashier to show Klarna’s own checkout, or to skip pay-by-bank entirely and redirect you toward cards or e-wallets.

Is SOFORT still available at online casinos?

At some casinos, yes. Availability depends entirely on which payment processor that casino uses. Stripe discontinued SOFORT and told merchants to switch to another method. Adyen continues to document and support it. The brand itself has been folded into Klarna, so a casino that still shows SOFORT may present it under a different name at the cashier. On our own list, several casinos currently show SOFORT or its Klarna-branded successor as a working deposit option.

What is the main disadvantage of using Sofortüberweisung?

The biggest practical downside is that it only moves money in one direction. It deposits into the casino but has no documented payout leg, so you need a second method for withdrawals regardless of how you deposited. A secondary downside is that settlement on your bank’s side can lag by a business day, so a confirmed cashier deposit can still show as pending on the bank side.

Can I still use Sofortüberweisung to fund a casino account today?

Yes, at casinos whose payment processor still supports it, using the same bank-login flow that has been in place for years. You choose your bank, log in on the processor’s own screen, and confirm the payment with your bank’s strong customer authentication step. The button may now read Klarna Pay Now, depending on which processor the casino uses, but the underlying mechanism remains unchanged. You still authenticate directly with your own bank.
